Plaza Mayor
Designed by Alberto Churriguera and completed in 1755, this is widely considered the finest Baroque square in Spain. The uniform arcades enclose a space that feels more like an outdoor ballroom than a public square. Look up at the 88 medallion portraits carved into the arches: Spanish kings, conquistadors, and literary figures line the upper level. The square is the social center of Salamanca, packed with university students at night and old men in berets reading newspapers in the morning. Coffee at the terrace cafes is overpriced (4 to 5 EUR for a cafe con leche), but the setting is hard to argue with. Open 24/7, free.
