1. Costa Nova
A short drive from the city center brings you to this strip of land sandwiched between the lagoon and the Atlantic, famous for its 'palheiros'—wooden houses painted in bright vertical stripes. Originally built by fishermen to store gear, they have evolved into desirable holiday homes, creating a streetscape that looks like a candy shop come to life. The visual impact is immediate and undeniable, making it a favorite for photographers and strollers.
Beyond the colorful facades, the ocean side of Costa Nova offers a wilder, wind-swept beach experience. Wooden boardwalks protect the dunes and provide a long, flat walking path that stretches for miles, perfect for clearing your head after the bustle of town. The air here is thick with salt spray, and the Atlantic waves are often too rough for casual swimming, attracting surfers and bodyboarders instead.
While it is technically outside the main cluster of Aveiro attractions, leaving the region without seeing these stripes is a mistake. The area also hosts a fresh fish market where you can see the daily catch arriving, linking the picturesque houses back to the gritty maritime work that built them.
