Wine country, the Karst and the Adriatic coast
Longer stays open up Slovenia's wine regions. The Brda hills and the Vipava valley are about an hour by car, and the Karst plateau with its cellars and prosciutto villages is the same distance in the other direction. Piran on the Adriatic, a compact Venetian-era town, is 90 minutes by car. Four-plus days work best in May, September, or October, when the roads are quiet and the countryside is at its most vivid.

- Buy the combined funicular plus castle ticket (15€) at Krekov trg to skip two separate queues up to Ljubljana Castle. The cobbled footpath takes 15 to 20 minutes and is steep, fine in spring or autumn but punishing above 30°C. The last funicular down is at 21:00 in summer.
- The Open Kitchen (Odprta kuhna, Pogačarjev trg) runs Fridays only, March to November, and is cancelled in heavy rain with very short notice. Check odprtakuhna.si the morning of your visit. Arrive by 12:30 to pick freely from all 20-plus vendors; the Slovenian stews and grilled meats sell out by 14:00. If it is rained off, the Saturday Central Market (07:00 to 14:00) is the fallback.
- The National Museum of Slovenia is free the first Sunday of every month, but that draws heavy crowds from 10:00 to 13:00. Either arrive at 09:00 opening or come Tuesday to Thursday and pay the 8€. Note it, the National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the City Museum are all closed Mondays.
- For the Festive December lights, avoid the official switch-on weekend around 27 November, which draws enormous domestic crowds. Come Monday to Thursday in the first or second week of December for the same city-wide spectacle with a fraction of the people. New Year's Eve on Prešernov trg is completely packed.
- The best light for photographing the Triple Bridge, Central Market colonnade and Cankarjevo nabrežje is 07:00 to 08:30, golden hour as the market opens. Return at dusk (20:30 to 21:30 in July) when the Plečnik stonework glows under the streetlamps.
- The NLB Ljubljana Marathon (17 to 18 October) closes the entire city centre on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, and 3-star centre hotels book out six to eight weeks ahead. If your trip touches 15 to 20 October, reserve by late August and do not plan to drive or see the Old Town on the Sunday morning.
- Metelkova Mesto, the autonomous art commune, is worth a daylight walk for its street art and quirky facades, but it only comes alive as a club venue Thursday to Saturday from about 23:00. Show up earlier or on another night and it is dead.
- The Volčji Potok Arboretum (25km north, 30 minutes by car or about an hour by bus) draws coachloads on spring weekends.
