Rue Sainte-Claire
You enter the old town through its spinal cord: a street lined with heavy stone arcades that have sheltered shoppers from snow and sun for centuries. The colonnaded passageways date to the 16th century, and the rhythm of arches framing mountain views overhead is worth slowing down for. On Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings, market vendors fill the pavement with local Savoyard cheeses, cured meats, and sausages. The ground floor of nearly every building houses a restaurant or shop, pushing tables out onto the cobblestones. By evening, the smell of melted cheese from tartiflette and fondue drifts from every open door. At the end of the street stands the Porte Sainte-Claire, a medieval gate marking the old fortified limit of the city. Look for number 18, the Hotel Favre Vieille, whose facade is a masterpiece of the street's history. The door is often closed, but the exterior alone rewards the glance. Walk uphill toward the castle ramparts.
