  1. 1

    Passeig de Vara de Rey

    Passeig de Vara de Rey

Start at Ibiza Town's central promenade, a tree-lined boulevard named after General Joaquin Vara de Rey, who died defending Spain's last position in Cuba during the 1898 war. The surrounding buildings date from the 19th century, and the cafes along both sides fill up by mid-morning. This is where locals meet, not just tourists. The promenade connects the port area to the old town entrance, so you will see everyone from fishermen to clubbers depending on the hour. Free and open around the clock. Grab a coffee at one of the terrace cafes before you start climbing.

    Puig des Molins Necropolis

    Puig des Molins Necropolis

Walk west from the promenade toward this UNESCO-listed burial ground, used continuously from the 7th century BC through the Roman period. Over 3,000 Phoenician and Carthaginian tombs are cut into the hillside. The on-site museum displays artifacts including terracotta figurines, glass beads, and painted ostrich eggs used as grave offerings. You can descend into several of the actual tomb chambers, which are cool and dim even in summer. This is one of the best-preserved Phoenician sites in the Mediterranean, and it is almost always empty compared to the crowded old town above. Admission is 3 EUR for adults, 2 EUR reduced, free for children under 16. Open Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays.

    Museu d'Art Contemporani

    Museu d'Art Contemporani

Climb into Dalt Vila through the walls and find this museum inside an 18th-century powder magazine and armory. The building itself is as interesting as the art: thick stone walls, low vaulted ceilings, and narrow windows designed for defense, not aesthetics. The collection features international contemporary artists alongside Ibiza-based painters and sculptors. Exhibitions rotate, so what you see depends on the season. The courtyard outside the museum has a direct view down to the port and the sea beyond. Stop here to catch your breath before the final push to the cathedral summit.

    Ibiza Cathedral

    Ibiza Cathedral

Continue uphill through the narrow streets of Dalt Vila to reach the 14th-century cathedral at the highest point of the fortress. Built on the foundations of a Moorish mosque, the single-nave Gothic interior is plain and powerful, stripped of excess decoration. The fortified bell tower doubled as a watchtower, scanning the Mediterranean for pirate raids. From the terrace outside the cathedral entrance, the panoramic view covers the entire harbour, Formentera island on clear days, and the salt flats to the south. The church is free to enter. The Museum of the Sacristy costs 3 EUR. Open Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM, Sunday mornings only.

    Portal de ses Taules

    Portal de ses Taules

Descend back through Dalt Vila to exit through the main Renaissance gateway, flanked by headless Roman statues that were repurposed as architectural decoration when the fortress was built. The Italian military engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi designed these 16th-century walls, and the gate's proportions are deliberately imposing: wide enough for supply carts, tall enough to intimidate attackers. Walk through the gate and look back to appreciate the full scale of the fortification walls, which rise over 20 meters in places. The drawbridge mechanism is long gone, but the slots for it are still visible in the stonework. Free and open around the clock. From here, you are a two-minute walk back to the port and the bars along the marina.

Self-Guided Tour vs. Group Tour in Ibiza

Most people come to Ibiza for the clubs and beaches, which means they miss one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in the Mediterranean. This walk takes you from sea level to the cathedral summit in under two hours, through 2,500 years of layered history: Phoenician tombs, a Moorish mosque foundation, a Gothic cathedral, Renaissance military walls, and 19th-century colonial-era architecture. The views from the top of Dalt Vila are worth the climb alone, and the Puig des Molins necropolis is genuinely world-class but rarely crowded. Do this walk in the morning, before the midday heat hits the exposed cobblestones. By early afternoon the stones radiate heat and the climb becomes punishing.

Common Questions

It is a steady uphill walk on cobblestones, gaining about 80 meters in elevation. Reasonably fit walkers will manage it fine. Take it slowly if needed, and use the Museu d'Art Contemporani courtyard as a rest stop with shade and a view.
Yes. The streets of Dalt Vila are open around the clock and beautifully lit after dark. The cathedral and museums close in the evening, but walking through the fortress at night with the harbour lights below is a completely different experience from the daytime tour.
Talamanca Beach is a 15-minute walk from the port, or Figueretes Beach is 10 minutes south. Do this walking tour in the morning, grab lunch by the marina, and head to the beach for the afternoon. That is a solid Ibiza day that goes beyond clubbing.
