Altes Schloss (Burg Meersburg)
Start at the top, with the old castle filling the sky as you approach from the upper town. Burg Meersburg is reputedly Germany's oldest inhabited castle, with a first fortification on this rock assumed to date to the 7th century, though nothing visible survives from that far back. It is privately owned and still lived in, which is rare, and the interior is a warren of cellars, a knights' hall, dungeons, and a tower with lake views. Entry is €12.80 for adults, €11.50 for seniors and students, €10 for youth 14 to 18, and €8 for children 6 to 13. Open daily 9:00 to 18:00 from March to October, and 10:00 to 18:00 November to February. The ticket is worth it if you like castles you can actually climb through rather than rope-lined rooms. Allow 60 to 90 minutes inside. From the gate, walk a few steps downhill toward the lake and the harbor opens up below you.
